about

(For Ireland I would not tell her name). Recorded by many including Sean-Nós singer Nioclas Toibín. The tune said to have been composed by David Rizzio for Mary Queen of Scots in the 16th Century, the air - ‘The Tweeside’. The poem put to this air is supposedly composed by Kerry poet Finnín O’Scamnaill around the year 1810. One explanation as to the words is that it is a conversation between a priest and his brother, where the priest is in love with his brothers bride-to-be.
